Dec 24, 2015 The original writer of Silver Bells, Ray Evans, was born and raised in Salamanca. So, in the yuletide spirit we decided to honor him and our "Silver Bells" started out as "Tinkle Bells." Said Ray Evans, "We never thought that tinkle had a double meaning until Jay went home and his first wife said, 'Are you out of your mind? Do you know what the word tinkle is?'" The word is slang for urination. "Silver Bells" was written for the movie, The Lemon Drop Kid, starring Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell in 1951. It was written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, who were very reluctant to write a Christmas song as new ones had never made the hit list. Today I found out the Christmas song Silver Bells was originally called Tinkle Bells. To make matters slightly more humorous, Silver Bells originally appeared in the The Lemon Drop Kid, a 1951 film starring Bob Hope. Needless to say, these two things would have surely resulted in the song getting a few chuckles, had composer Jay Livingston’s wife, Lynne Gordon, not stepped in.
